Program Overview

What if we stopped throwing rules and tools at people and instead taught them how to change their thinking so they could live a healthy lifestyle?” – Michael Scholtz, MA

In this program, experienced wellness coaches Michael Scholtz, MA, and Greg Hottinger, MPH, RD, and moderator Julie Schwartz MS, RD, share how to effectively use a coaching approach when reviewing goals with clients.

With a focus on creating a more effective and efficient flow for your goal review process, the program will explore how health professionals can use specific coaching tools, such as appreciative inquiry and motivational interviewing, to tap into the power of positivity, and a strengths-based approach to change and foster positive energy, trust, and rapport with clients.

Learning Objectives

The goal of this presentation is to educate healthcare providers how positive thinking can not only help heal, but also help prevent health issues from occurring in the first place, both in themselves and in their patients.  This information will also enable the provider to facilitate healthy behaviors in the community through education and modeling.

Upon completion, participants will be able to do the following:

  1.  Implement a client follow-up session in a way that fosters positive energy, trust, and rapport.

  2.  Implement the goal review process using a strengths-based approach and empathy reflections to create a positive frame for the rest of the conversation.

  3.  Support the client in focusing on possibilities instead of solutions by discovering personal strengths, championing successes, and staying judgment-free when encountering challenges.

  4.  Support and empower the client to choose appropriate next steps.
